PEACH Hosts the Crucial 8th Global Symposium for Regulators

Pattaya, Thailand – The Pattaya Exhibition and Convention Hall (PEACH), the world-class meetings facility of the multi award-winning Royal Cliff Beach Resort, hosted the crucial 8th Global Symposium for Regulators (GSR08) held from 11 to 13 March.

 

Themed “Six Degrees of Sharing: Innovative infrastructure sharing and open access strategies to promote affordable access for all”, the three-day event was organised by the Telecommunication Development Bureau (BDT) of International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in collaboration with the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology and the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) of Thailand.

 

GSR08 is an annual event bringing together heads of national telecommunication regulatory authorities from both developed and developing countries and has earned a reputation as the global venue for regulators to share their views and experiences as part of the worldwide community of regulators. The meeting fosters an open dialogue between regulators and key ICT stakeholders: the private sector, investors and consumers.

 

The participants of GSR08 had an opportunity to discuss and debate a range of sharing strategies. Specific topics to be covered include active and passive infrastructure sharing, functional/operational separation, international and domestic mobile roaming regulation, international gateway liberalisation, sharing of end devices and innovative applications, regulatory/policy harmonisation and universal access.

 

The opening ceremony of the symposium was attended by ITU Secretary General Dr. Hamadoun I. Touré, BDT Director Mr. Sami Al Basheer Al Mohshid, GILF Chairman Mr. Sanjiv Ahuja, United States Federal Communications Commission Chairman Mr. Kevin Martin, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India Chairman Mr. Nirpendra Mishra, NTC Chairman and GSR08 Chairperson General Choochart Promphrasid, NTC Secretary General Mr. Suranan Wongvithayakamjorn and policy makers and industry leaders from more than 100 countries.
